Ayurveda courses await central nod in Orissa

Students looking to take admission in Ayurveda are in a fix with the central government yet to give a nod for admission to government-run Ayurvedic colleges in the state. Candidates have already been selected for admission in the first year to bachelor in Ayurvedic medicine and surgery (BAMS) in three Ayurvedic medical colleges in the state through the Odisha Joint Entrance Examination (OJEE).

The department of Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (Ayush) under Union ministry of health and family welfare grants permissions to Ayurvedic and homeopathic colleges to conduct admission in first year in the five-and-half year duration (one-year internship) courses after getting the reports from the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) and Central Council of Homeopathic (CCH).

The CCH has already written the homeopathic colleges not to take admission this year without their permission. The CCIM’s permission to take admission in Ayurveda College is still awaited.

The inspection of the infrastructure facilities in the state-run Ayurvedic colleges was done by a CCIM team in March. While there are three government-run Ayurveda colleges – Ankushapaur, near Berhampur, Balangir and Puri, four homeopathic medical colleges – Berhampur, Bhubaneswar, Sambalpur and Rourkela are functioning in the state, the seat of each Ayurvedic and homeopathic colleges is 30 and 25 respectively.

The admission in 38-year-old Ayurvedic college, Ankushapur was not held in 2011-12, as the CCIM had not granted permission citing its poor infrastructure, basically shortage of teaching faculties. Presently the staff position and its infrastructure facilities have been improved and they are hoping to get to start admission soon.
