The Atharva veda contains descriptions about the use of herbs for health and healing as was practiced by the ancient Aryans. This scientifically documented body of knowledge, known as the Ayurvedic system of medicine, relies heavily on the healing properties of herbs and plants. Other systems of alternate medicine which are primarily based on herbal remedies are the Graeco-Arab (Unani), Homeopathy and Siddha. It is estimated that more than 8000 medicinal plants are used in India and South East Asia, while China uses around 5,000 plant remedies. In the UK, about 2,600 products obtained from some 280 herbs are sold as herbal remedies.
For best results herbal remedies should be initiated in the early stages of the disease. The treatment may be continued if there are signs of improvement; otherwise professional medical advice should be sought
