Yoga: Dealing with Infertility
Infertility is an uncommon and abnormal deficiency, while fertility is common and normal. In certain societies such as India, it can even be a dispiriting problem. Just as all other animals, human beings too like to see that the future progeny flourishes. It is an innate human desire, almost like an instinct. Discussion on fertility is at the center-stage of human life and its continuity.
The Vedas say,
‘Angad-angad sambhavasi hridayad-adhijayase,
atma vai putranamasi’,
–‘An offspring is essentially considered to be an extension of the body as well as soul’.
In the classic Upanishads (Brihadaranyaka-iii.5.1), Putraishana i.e. ‘to raise up the next generation’ is considered as one of the three base human Eshanas (aspirations). Other two being: Vittaishana (financial security) and Lokaishana (name and fame).
