AYUSH Terminology to be included in (ICD)-11 with WHO in 3 years: AYUSH Secretary

New Delhi: Ministry of AYUSH has been working towards getting AYUSH Terminology included in (ICD)-11 with World Health Organisation (WHO) in next 3 years. “We have had meetings with WHO and I am hopeful that we would be able to make AYUSH related terminology a part of International Classical Diseases (ICD)-11 with WHO,” informed Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of AYUSH.

ICD-11 is the new classification of diseases released in June 2018 by WHO. “It enables us to understand so much about what makes people get sick and die, and to take action to prevent suffering and save live,” informed Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General.

It will include new chapters, one on traditional medicine: although millions of people use traditional medicine worldwide, it has never been classified in this system. ICD-11 will be presented at the World Health Assembly in May 2019 for adoption by Member States, and will come into effect on 1 January 2022. This release is an advance preview that will allow countries to plan how to use the new version, prepare translations, and train health professionals all over the country.

AYUSH Ministry under the AYUSH GRID, has launched ‘National Ayush Morbidity and Standardized Terminologies Electronic Portal (NAMASTE – PORTAL)’. The portal is a solution for morbidity data for AYUSH related services. Morbidity data means a standard terminology for all AYUSH related things. “We are in fact working towards using this platform to get AYUSH related terminology in International Classical Diseases (ICD)-11 with WHO. We are yet to be the part of one of the chapters ‘Traditional Medicine’ of ICD-11. We are hopeful of being part of the same in next 3 years. We are really working hard for the same,” added Secretary, Ministry of AYUSH.
