The Dr. NRS Government Ayurvedic College, Vijayawada, is all set to be the first victim of the impending bifurcation of the State. The Department of AYUSH has put on hold lecturer promotions which will cost the college five post-graduate (PG) seats and about Rs.1 crore funds toward stipends to the PG students and other expenditure incurred by them. The Central Council for Indian Medicine (CCIM) refused to grant permission to the college to admit candidates in the under-graduate (UG) and PG courses for two academic years on the grounds that it lacked teaching staff with the required qualifications and experience. With a little effort from the State AYUSH Department, the CCIM “reluctantly” granted permission for admissions into UG courses this academic year. Permission was, however, not granted for intake of five candidates in the PG course of Rasashstra (science of mercury and compounds) because the college did not have a senior grade professor.

The consequence of this halt in the process will be on meritorious candidates as they have to pay donation of up to Rs.15 lakh in colleges in other States and study without a stipend. The Dr.NRS Ayurvedic College would also lose funds for lab equipment and chemicals that were sanctioned with the seats.
