Demand for Ayurveda Varsity, and AYUSH Research Centre in Karwar
BJP’s Uttara Kannada unit has demanded that the Central government set up an Ayurveda University and an AYUSH Research Centre in Karwar for the benefit of people of Karnataka and Goa. In a memorandum submitted to Union Minister for AYUSH and Tourism Shripad Naik, the BJP leaders stated that the district is located in the Western Ghat ranges, which has unique medicinal plants and herbs that are not found in the rest of the world. Since time immemorial, people in the region have been using these plants to cure many diseases, which cannot be treated by allopathic medicines. The memorandum states that proper research is required for these plants.
As Karwar is very near Goa airport and well connected by road, rail, and sea, it is the most suitable place to set up the university. All states (Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Gujarat), which fall in the Western Ghat ranges, have Ayurveda universities, while Karnataka, which covers the major portion of the Western Ghats, does not have one. Also, thousands of tourists visit here for medical tourism, especially for Ayurveda, every year. The vast area is available in different places of Karwar such as Sadashivgad and Siddarto set up the university. This will be beneficial for the people of Karnataka as well as Goa. They requested the Minister to take up the issue with the HRD and other ministries concerned.
