Leh to host IDY this Year
New Delhi/Bengaluru.
This year, International Day of Yoga (IDY) will be celebrated in Leh. According to a source in the AYUSH ministry, this year International Day of Yoga will be held in Leh. Leh is the largest town of Ladakh. On 31 October 2019 Ladakh has been constituted as a new union territory of India, separated from the rest of Jammu and Kashmir.
The International Day of Yoga is celebrated annually all over the word on 21 June. The idea of International day of Yoga was first proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 27 September 2014. Following this, the UNGA announced 21st June of every year as International Day of Yoga. ‘Why is the venue not being announced?’ Replying to this, our sources informed, “An official announcement will soon be made through PMO. Although, we are working on preparatory part, because the climate of Leh is different from rest of plain India.’
A self-regulatory body of leading yoga organisations in India, Indian Yoga Association (IYA) has appreciated this move of the Ayush Ministry. Joint Secretary, IYA, Ravi Tumurli said that ‘Leh, the land of high passes is located at the height of approx. 3500 metre altitude. Living at high altitude is challenging because of physical and environmental conditions. Our soldiers, who are posted there, are subjected to the rigors of altitude calamities daily. For them, Yoga and Yogasana are very important. It makes them fit and calm. Although, high altitude acclimatisation is very important.’
During the inaugural day of 23rd INCOFYRA (International Conference on Frontiers In Yoga Research and Its Applications) in S-VYASA, Bengaluru, Founder President of Mahabodhi International Meditation Centre (Leh) Ven. Bhikkhu Sanghasena said, ‘We had also received this information (true of false, no idea) that this year IDY will be celebrated in Leh. This is very important for whole Ladakh, because on IDY’s venue Prime Minister comes. If venue is Leh, then we are more than happy. Leh is considered to be a spiritual and historical place on the map of India, and on 21st June we can show rest of the world how deeply we are rooted in this place.’
Bhikku Sanghasena established Mahabohi International Meditation Centre in 1986 to offer spiritual and humanitarian services in Leh.
