Government and aided Ayurveda colleges in Kerala state can enhance their seats by about 80 as they are currently under-utilizing their facilities, according to the newly revised rules of the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) under the minimum standards requirements for Ayurveda colleges. The colleges can be better streamlined with the setting up of Ayush department. According to CCIM rules, a 60-bedded hospital/college with 30 teachers can have an intake of 60 students. However, most colleges are not availing it. Though the government college at Tripunithura can admit 60 seats, only 50 students are studying at present in a batch. In Kannur, it is only 40, whereas aided colleges like Vaidyaratnam Thaikkattu Moos College at Ollur and P K Warrier College at Kottakkal has only 50 seats. Based on the new rules, a total of 50 seats can be enhanced in the government and aided sectors. If the authorities write to the Centre, he said, it will be granted this academic year itself; this would not add any extra expenditure on the government. The colleges will have to apply to CCIM and after inspection; the seats could be enhanced provided they meet the infrastructure requirements.
