‘I can’t do it,’ she announces a few days later.
‘Do what?’ I ask.
‘I can’t go for that meeting. I’ve called that woman a whole lot of names. Can’t face her. No way.’
‘If you’ve done it, you’ve got to face it,’ I say.
‘I don’t have to do anything. I’m quitting.’
‘Winners never quit,’ I quote I-don’t-know-who. ‘Quitters never win.’
‘Maybe I don’t want to win.’
‘Sure?’
She shakes her head, draws herself up and says in a determined manner: ‘No. I have to win this one. What do I have to lose? There’s nothing I’ve said or done that I have to feel guilty or sorry for, right? They are the ones who should be feeling rotten.’
