The stress-related ailments may be precipitated by sudden traumatic experiences or may be the result of a gradual build up of tension due to everyday problems and difficulties, determined largely by the person’s attitudes and personality make up. As a child I always suffered from stomachache. No one connected the pain with anything else other than infection or amoebaisis as they called it, and gave me various medicines for it. After some years, our family doctor told my parents that my sickness was in my head! Later on when I was in my early twenties and there were no exams to make me sick, I still continued to suffer the cramps – but by now there was a medical diagnosis – irritable bowel syndrome.
