Decoding Gandhiji’s Diet
The Gandhis were strict vegetarians. When young Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was in school, a wave of ‘reform’ was sweeping over his town Rajkot. People had started consuming meat and alcohol secretly. This was due to the belief that the British being meat eaters were stronger than Indians and hence were able to rule over our country. So, in order to be as strong as the British, to be able to fight them and send them away from our country, young Gandhi also started consuming non-vegetarian cuisine. This continued for a year. He finally quit non-vegetarian food as it involved lying to his parents, though he planned to resume later – a plan which eventually did not fructify.
