Patanjali’s Analysis of the Modifications of the Mind
To achieve a meditative state of mind, we need to hinder the modifications of the mind. If we wish to stop or hinder something, we must understand its nature and qualities beforehand. In Part I, Sutra 5 to 11, Patanjali describes that there are five major modifications of the mind, which can be either afflictive or non-afflictive. That means that the modifications can be either painful or are just routine modifications.
