Kama is the cause of cosmic continuity
Out of the eight major disciplines of Ayurveda, two are devoted to geriatrics (Rasayana) and to enhancing Sexual energy (Vajikarana). In the citation from Atharva Veda, Kama is said to be the highest because through it we can experience the senses to the utmost level, attain a momentary state of beatitude and it is the cause of procreation. Thus, Kama is the cause of cosmic continuity.
The first phase of sexuality is vata and it involves evoking and exciting the senses. It is the rajas phase of sexuality. The senses are brought to their optimum level in the rajas phase and reach their threshold. They fall momentarily in a non-functional state. It is a tamas state of sexuality and the French call it Le petit mort. When the senses do not function any more or are temporarily withdrawn, there comes a yogic moment of a complete inner stillness.
