History of the Healing Art
The very word itself has been identified in recent times with a variety of ideas, concepts, understandings etc. People understand it differently – some as a massage package, some as a bio-cleansing method, some as methods of rejuvenation etc. What is the real sense and depth of this word in Ayurveda ?
Karma word, has been elaborately used in Indian Philosophy and Mythology to describe any course of action. In Ayurveda too, this word has been used to describe the intended action of a medicine in the human body like deepana – carminative etc. for Jeeraka (Cumin seeds). Likewise, the word can be understood as an action of some medicine, but it isn’t the same everywhere. For, eg. vamana is one among the Panchakarma and it means emetic action; but, nasya is another Panchakarma and it doesn’t mean any particular action but indicates the route of administration (nasal) rather. It is clear that the method of application is to be understood from the word karma. Hence, it woluld be interesting further to zoom our lens into the actual implications of the term karma in the context of Panchakarma.
