Deep vein thrombosis, or deep venous thrombosis, (DVT) is the formation of a blood clot (thrombus) within a deep vein, predominantly in the legs. Deep inside the calf muscles of legs, there is a plexus of deep veins, where the blood tends to pool when the muscles are nor active. Prolonged pooling of blood in these veins, as occurs in long distance air travel or forced immobilization in bed, predisposes to clot formation. Aged, obese and women on oral contraceptives are more susceptible to clot formation.
